Jason and Pete’s excellent gifts

If you’re a Force-Cast fan, you must know Jason is ready to welcome a very young padawan, and Pete’s about to become one with his fiancée.

These two great occasions call for a great proof of friendship and best wishes from us, the fans.

After toying with several ideas, an idea came up, and we agreed on a nice concept: offer Jason and Pete a personnalized Star Wars Force-Cast Vault (one for each).
The idea is to let each fan create a page for each vault. All pages assembled into a book will make the perfect unique gift.

Here is what you have to do to participate:

  • You will need: Two sheets of paper (‘US Letter’ or ‘A4’ format),  a piece of Star Wars memorabilia, or a personal text, an audio or video file … anything! (one for Pete, one for Jason)
  • The sheet of paper can be ‘US Letter’ (8.5″x11″) or ‘A4’ format (8.3″x11.7″), but keep in mind that you can only use a 8″x11″ area of that sheet.
As for the paper quality, it should be strong enough to support what you’re going to glue/staple/paint on it.
  • Use one side of the sheet only to write a personal message, and maybe add a small item (it has to be flat of course: newspaper article, photograph, vintage candy wrapping paper, origami, …)
Remember to restrict your participation to a 8″x11″ area, but don’t cut the excess paper on your sheet. This will be done by the person who receives all the sheets
  • If you’re in an audio or video mood, unleash your creative power, and create a file that will be added to a DVD (or CD) coming with each Vault.
  • Send each sheet (one for Jason’s newborn, one for Pete’s wedding, remember?) to shazbazzar in a separate envelope each.

Why separate envelopes? Because we’re going to include each contributor’s stamps in each vault, which means two different envelopes (and sets of stamps) are needed.

EDIT: You might also send your two pages in the same envelope, as long as you make sure there are several stamps on it, so that shaz can put some of your stamps on Jason’s page, some on Pete’s. Two letter is ideal, but one would do too!

  • Once all the sheets are received, shaz will cut them to size (8×11″), add a nice cover (artists are needed for both covers!), and assemble them (spiral binder)
Then the gifts will be sent to our favorite podcast hosts!
  • As for the DVD (or CD), it still hasn’t been decided if it should have an interactive menu, or just contain the raw files. Depending on the time we have, the best solution will be chosen
Eric will be in charge of collecting the multimedia files, and assemble them in an orderly fashion, within a feature-rich interface :p

Please upload your files at the following location:
    http://drop.io/forcecast
You will be asked a password, which is the full name of that unthinkable character.
You will have to write it in lowercase, without separators (for example: anakinskywalker, padmenaberrie, macewindu are the correct way to write the password)
If you don’t figure out the password, just drop me a PM in the RebelScum Forums (user name Satka), and I’ll be happy to help!

  • Ah … the time … you have almost one month to create your contribution, since you should have sent your two envelopes and/or files before the 30th of November

I volunteer to lead the strike team — I mean, to collate the DVD for those interested in making interactive or electronic content.

One question: should we do as much as we can on the computer so that the pages are flat and smooth like the actual SW Vault? I think so.

    Eric:
    – I didn’t want to give you “yet another assignment”, but since you gladly take it, here you go! :p
One suggestion if I may: if you’re going to author a DivX with menus (that was my initial idea), or something similar based on a unique file containing all “chapters”, it would be a good idea to add the source audio and video files in a separate folder, so that they can be seen/manipulated independently (oh my, I think I’m not being very clear here :p)
    – Yes, I also think the pages should be as flat as possible. I know I will break the rule with my PT movie ticket butts, though :p

  4. erier2003 says:

You’re being perfectly clear. I will do that. Although we would need a lot of video footage to justify doing chapters. I think everyone should record a quick video clip of themselves (it can be on a digital camera and then transfer it to a computer) and I’ll add that to the montage.

  5. erier2003 says:

I think we should all post our Vault pages to a central location (I can easily set one up) so everyone can see everyone else’s. It’s not like we’re getting copies of the book, and it would take too long (and be too potentially damaging) for Stuart to scan the pages into the computer once he gets them all.

This is obviously easier said than done if you’re not using the computer (say, Photoshop or MS Word) to make your page. But if you’re doing it by hand, at least make a sketch in MS Paint and post that so we can see what you have planned.

  6. satka says:

Good idea, and the same goes for the multimedia files

Electronic versions of the Vaults would let us discover what the other fans created, but more importantly, Jason & Pete could use them as the online part of their gift, and they could flip through it wherever they are!

What “central location” were you thinking of?
Of course, I can help if need be!

  7. erier2003 says:

Well there is a site called drop.io where anyone can upload PDFs, Word docs, image files, etc. and everyone can see them. It’s basically a community drop box. I have created a “drop” on their site and I’ll give out all the details once the pages are done.

Hey Guys, Paul here from the house of McQuarrie. I approve of this wholeheartedly. If no one else wants the job I’ll knock up a couple of cover images. I designed the covers for the last two Ralph books, so I guess I can pull this off for you if you like!

If you do want me to design something it’ll take me at least 10 days to have the time – but it’ll be nice. I can upload it in any format you like – or just post something over like everyone else. If you want me to do this let me know what you want to be the written content (front and back). OK? (email me the old fashioned way Eric) – by the way you might want to do additional copies for Steve Sansweet – he’ll want one, seriously.

    Stay happy guys . . . Paul

  9. erier2003 says:

Steve can have a copy if he lets me into Skywalker Ranch, the Presidio complex, AND Rancho Obi-Wan.

I just thought of a potential problem. If we take the two envelopes to the UPS store to mail them, will they use stamps, or will they put it in a machine that scans a label onto the envelopes? The latter poses a problem.

Lady Womp and I thought of a brilliant idea. I’m going Indy on this one and making a map of the world with everywhere I’ve taken my iPod since I started listening to the Force-Cast. I’ll use red thread as the lines to link all the locations around the world.

I also am planning to make two of the Nadel/Swank ’08 stickers (yes, real stickers) as a Star Wars Vault type goodie to package with the deal. All told, I’m looking at a flat page, probably the thickness of two cardstock pages.

Send both to Stuart (Shaz) by end of Sept, right? Arts and crafts… gotta love it. Are we thinking of anything for the rest of the FC or Indy-Cast crew, maybe later on?

  12. satka says:

    – Paul: Offering to create the cover is a really cool proposition! I think you should check with JediShua, who’s also interested in the concept. Maybe you could share the work (one book each for example?)
    – Eric: I’ll send my pages through regular mail, sandwiching the page between sheets of thicker paper to prevent folding, so I’ll get to choose the stamps 🙂
    – womprat … Nice ideas! These Vaults are going to be great objects, maybe the best SW collecting items ever!

  13. erier2003 says:

Satka: I guess I’ll just grab a manila envelope (tan envelope a little bigger than 8.5×11) and throw them in there with some cardboard. That should work!

  14. erier2003 says:

Satka, I would recommend taking out my email address as the point of contact for the DVD media files. Tell them to drop everything on drop.io/forcecast instead. That way I can download them at my leisure and the email doesn’t take forever to download their attachments.

  15. womprat99 says:

I finished up on my contribution today. I’m going to try to get in the mail this week to Stuart.

I’ve created a web page with some photos so you can all see it. Take a look here: http://searosegrotto.googlepages.com/Project.htm

    Have a great day, everyone.

    –Mike

  16. satka says:

Womp, this is great! It really gives a sense of how the FC is with us all the time, wherever we are, and that those guys are our ethereal friends now 🙂

  17. jedishua says:

Hey Guys, I have a cover (or at least a picture you can use) for Jason’s stuff. To whom should I send it?

  18. satka says:

I just saw your contribution on drop.io/forcecast.
They are great, I’m sure our favorite hosts will be really happy 😉

  19. womprat99 says:

Stuart told me the deadline was extended. Do we have a new one?

  20. satka says:

Yes, the new deadline is the 30th of November (I updated the main page)

  21. jedijustin says:

Sweet – glad the deadline for our submissions was extended. Had so much going on lately that I have not had time to work on this.

  22. jedijustin says:

Has anybody completely finished their projects yet?

  23. satka says:

Shaz received mine … I hope everybody’s working on theirs!
I think an announcement of some kind should be made

  24. jedijustin says:

I am definitely pulling to have mine done and received by shaz before the start of November.

  25. erier2003 says:

My project is done and at Shaz’s abode. I’m just waiting patiently for everyone else now. 🙂

  26. womprat99 says:

Mine is done with the exception of going to the post office, getting stamps, and putting it in the mail. The working hours of 9-5 for the post office are so inconvenient sometimes. 🙂

  27. jedijustin says:

Finished my two projects and uploaded them to the Drop box as two pictures (I saved each project as a .jpeg file). Gonna mail them out to shaz first thing Monday morning!

  28. jedijustin says:

Hey Shaz – I’d like to laminate my Vault pages before I mail them to you. I should have them laminated and mailed out to you within the next week for sure.

  29. jedijustin says:

Shaz – my FC Vault pages were shipped out to you this morning Nov. 4th via USPS Priority Mail. Thanks!

  30. jedijustin says:

Shaz received my laminated vault pages yesterday afternoon. I am good to go! 🙂

  31. womprat99 says:

My pages are in the mail. Shaz, you should see them next week. 🙂

  32. erier2003 says:

So what does this leave us with? Of those who’ve committed to providing pages, who hasn’t followed through yet?

  33. erier2003 says:

So, the deadline has passed. When does the book get sent out?

  34. jedijustin says:

WOW – saw the finished product in the Drop box, and it looks AMAZING. Excellent artwork by Shua, and Shaz did a great job assembling the vault. Congrats to everyone who contributed to this awesome personalized gift!

  35. erier2003 says:

I’m sure Jason will talk about this with Jimmy on tomorrow’s show. We might even hear a prerecorded message from Pete, if he wants to express his thanks on the show. I bet Jay, Dan, and Dustin are getting pretty jealous of the gifts we’ve been sending out. 😉

  36. jedijustin says:

Jason was thoroughly impressed & thankful for the Vault on last night’s show. He said receiving it was his favorite moment of 2008. Congrats once again to everyone who contributed!
